IT contractors have been hit the hardest by the recession, with the exception of business services, research has indicated.
A survey from the freelancers’ trade group the PCG, undertaken on National Freelancers Day, revealed that around 70 per cent of member contractors involved in the computing and IT industry had found it harder to gain work since the start of the recession.
“Due to the fact that IT contractors tend to work for big clients, such as financial institutions and government departments, it is more likely that in the recession they will shed contractors as a savings exercise,” explained a PCG spokesperson.
The research also showed that 60 per cent of engineers polled had found it hard to find contracts since the beginning of the recession.
National Freelancers Day took place on November 23rd and was founded by the PCG.
The event is designed to promote freelancing and to call on the government for clear and fair taxation laws for such workers.
