Pension uncertainty ‘still remains’

British contractors and other workers are still unsure about whether they can afford to join a pension scheme, it has been claimed.

Contractor umbrella company members and other employees need to be given more advice about the benefits of joining a scheme, according to the National Association of Pension Funds.

Spokesperson for the organisation Mark Brooks explained that raising awareness will be particularly important in the run up to 2012, when all employers will be required to automatically enrol staff.

He added: “We need more communication, especially from the government and others about the benefits of saving for retirement.

“There is an issue around people’s understanding of pensions and that’s why we want to see education about pensions as being a high priority, especially for those who are in the early part of their employment career.”

The Pensions Regulator recently indicated that trustees are responsible for running pension schemes and need to make sure that they have the right skills to fulfil their commitments.
