The government has backed the development of a network of technology and innovation centres across the UK, which could interest umbrella company workers.

Recommendations in a report by technology entrepreneur Hermann Hauser suggested that the UK could boost its potential in high-sectors and create new jobs by establishing innovation networks.

Agreeing with the study’s findings, business minister Lord Mandelson said helping the UK’s firms to commercialise research will help maintain the country’s reputation as a world leader in cutting-edge technologies.

“Centres can play a vital role in bridging the gap between research and the market, strengthening our national capabilities in innovation. I am now determined that the UK builds a capability for the long term,” he commented.

The Hauser report claimed that industries which could be helped by technology and innovation centres include future internet technologies, satellite communications, advanced manufacturing and software addressing renewable technologies.

Earlier this week, Lord Mandelson and science minister Lord Drayson announced that the £40 million International Space Innovation Centre will be built at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.
