Good working conditions ‘protect health’

People could be at less risk of common health problems if they have more control over their working arrangements, it has been suggested, which may show the benefits of being a contractor.

A study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health claimed that serious health issues ranging from cardiovascular disease to mental health problems can be caused by poor working environments and conditions.

However, the research also suggested that improving conditions can prevent these risks and recommended setting a working week of between 31 to 40 hours, having a 14:00 finishing time and adapting surroundings to employees’ needs as good ways to support health.

Clara Llorens Serrano, the study’s lead author and a researcher at the Trade Union Institute of Labour, Environment and Health, advised to implement as many positive changes to their working lives as possible.

“These can be a key factor in the link between psychosocial risks and health, and are a prime target in terms of preventing the appearance of workplace stress,” she commented.

Earlier this year, research published by the Cochrane Library said flexible working arrangement can have several health benefits for individuals, such as improved mental wellbeing.
